Summary

Gonzales Elementary in Odessa, TX, serves 424 students from Pre-K through 5th grade as part of the Ector County Independent School District (Isd), where over 80% of students come from low socio-economic backgrounds.

Gonzales Elementary has shown a remarkable ability to bounce back from low points, making it a school of recovery rather than decline. After hitting a low statewide ranking in the 9th percentile in 2024-2025, it rebounded to the 26th percentile in 2025-2026—a significant improvement not seen in nearby schools like Burnet Elementary (dropping from 14th to 5th percentile) or Ireland Elementary (dropping from 11th to 7th). A standout strength is 4th-grade reading, where 47.17% of students were proficient in 2025-2026, outperforming the district average (43.47%) and nearby schools like El Magnet At Blackshear (38.95%) and Dowling Elementary (22.03%). However, 5th-grade math remains a critical weakness, with only 27.27% proficient—far below the district (40.24%) and state (47.38%) averages.

An interesting contrast is the school’s proximity to El Magnet At Reagan Elementary, a top-30 school in Texas (99th percentile) just 0.7 miles away, highlighting how magnet programs can create vastly different outcomes despite similar neighborhoods. Gonzales spends $12,603 per student, higher than peers like Blanton Elementary ($9,050), but this hasn’t translated into higher rankings—unlike Gale Pond Alamo Elementary, which spent a comparable amount and ranked in the 51st percentile. A bright spot is the school’s success with English Language Learner (ELL) students, who jumped from the 4th to the 54th percentile statewide in one year, suggesting targeted interventions are working. For parents, Gonzales offers a school capable of targeted improvement, with specific strengths in reading and ELL support, but persistent challenges in math that need attention.

Open Quote The staff at this school are great. My daughter went to Gonzales from 4th-6th. It is a far better school than the elementarty she went to before and most of the good friends she made are from there. The teachers really care about their students and want them to be successful. Nothing but great things to say about this school! Close Quote
