Summary

Alex Sanger Preparatory School is a public PK-8 school in Dallas, TX, serving 769 students within the Dallas Independent School District (Isd), and it stands out as a strong, stable option in a neighborhood where many nearby elementary schools struggle significantly.

While the school has recently earned a 3-star rating, it remains a clear outlier compared to its immediate peers. For example, nearby schools like Bayles Elementary and S S Conner Elementary hold 1-star ratings, and Buckner Terrace Montessori has a 2-star rating. Sanger’s most impressive feature is its middle school program (grades 6-8), where reading and math scores consistently exceed both district and state averages by wide margins. In 8th-grade reading, for instance, Sanger’s proficiency rate of 73.91% dramatically outpaces the district average of roughly 50-55%, and it also outperforms the other local PK-8 school, Eduardo Mata Montessori School, in both reading and math. The school also excels in Algebra I, with 73.24% of students proficient, far above the state average of 54.03%.

Another key strength is the school’s recent turnaround in serving special education students, who jumped from a 2-star rating to a 4-star rating in the latest data. However, performance can be volatile for other student groups, such as English Language Learners. Overall, Alex Sanger Prep offers a rare and valuable asset in this part of Dallas: a stable, high-quality educational pathway from elementary through 8th grade that successfully bridges a significant socioeconomic gap, making it a hidden gem for families seeking a strong middle school option that is not a magnet school.

Open Quote We are so fortunate to attend Sanger. This is a top-notch school, with the most dedicated teachers and staff possible. I have seen my son grow in such a positive way through his experience at Sanger, beginning in Kindergarten. Now in 6th grade, we are still so impressed with the Sanger Difference. I highly recommend Sanger! Close Quote

Open Quote Sanger is our neighborhood public school, and boy are we lucky! Our son is in 2nd grade at Alex Sanger, so this is our 3rd year at Sanger. We could not be happier. As a former teacher myself, I have been impressed with the school’s culture and the best practices that are being implemented in the classroom. The administration is very involved and communicative. The teachers care. Sanger’s dual language program is one of the best in the district, if not the state. We are amazed at how much Spanish our son is learning! He loves school and is excited to go each morning. We are so happy with our little neighborhood school, and look forward to many more years here. Close Quote

Open Quote If you want your child to be bilingual this is the school for you. My daughter has only had a semester and she is already speaking conversational Spanish. It's amazing how little kids can transfer language skills. At school reading and writing practice is in Spanish but at home she has started writing letters to her grandparents in English (and we did not teach her to write). Of course she tries to spell things phonetically which doesn't work out as well in English as it does in Spanish but we are still impressed with what her wizard of a teacher has accomplished. The entire school is energized by a very supportive PTA and an excellent principal. There are many extracurricular activities including a few sports for the older kids, a Suzuki violin program and clubs. Communication is clearly a priority of the administration. We regularly get notes home from both teachers and administrators updating us on what is going on as well as recorded messages announcing events and texted reminders about things like returning library books or "wear your college t-shirt day." I've also received several personal texts from my daughters teacher as well as a personal phone call. Close Quote

Open Quote I just enrolled my child for the first time. The office staff was very rude and it seems like this is a school for spanish speaking only. I'm very anxious about my child's education for this year. Close Quote

Open Quote My children just completed their third year at Sanger, and it was great! The dual language program is wonderful. The PTA is strong and active. The teachers and principles really care. The learning garden is beautiful. The sports teams are winners. We really love our school, and can't wait for the next school year! Close Quote

Open Quote We love Sanger Elementary. Our daughter has been there two years and I am impressed by all the things she is learning. Mr. Martinez is our new principal and has been welcoming to parents and volunteers and making changes for the better. There is so much there to be proud of. As our parent involvement grows I know our test scores will also come up. Close Quote

Open Quote The principal (Dr. Arthur Allen) is very rude to parents and staff. Teachers live in constant fear that the principal will visit their classroom and disrupt the class with very negative comments about the students or teachers. They are forced to teach only the subjects and material that will be tested in the TAKS, providing a very limited and insuficient education to our kids Close Quote
