Summary

Campbell Middle in Houston, TX, is a public school serving 1,076 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Isd), with a high percentage of students (85.59%) eligible for free or reduced lunch. The school has experienced a notable decline in overall state performance, dropping from the 54th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 29th percentile in 2025-2026, which contrasts with nearby schools like Hamilton Middle (4.49 miles away) that have consistently ranked in the top 15% of the state. While Campbell struggles with core subjects—such as 6th grade math where only 25.48% of students are proficient compared to the district average of 45.06%—it shows a striking strength in advanced mathematics, with 82.83% of Algebra I students proficient, far exceeding the district's 64.77%.

This "Algebra I paradox" suggests that while the school excels at accelerating top math students, the standard math curriculum may not be meeting the needs of the majority. The school's decline is not uniform across all student groups, with some subgroups seeing more significant drops in performance over recent years. Despite these academic challenges, Campbell maintains a consistently low dropout rate (0.8% to 1.0%), below the district average, indicating a supportive environment that keeps students engaged. In comparison, Edward Roberson Middle (5.94 miles away in Spring Independent School District (Isd)) serves a similarly high-poverty population but achieves 5-star ratings with proficiency rates of 70-90%+, showing that high poverty does not have to limit achievement.

Campbell's per-student spending ($10,055) is on par with or higher than higher-performing peers like Hamilton Middle ($8,531) and Labay Middle ($9,425), suggesting that funding is not the primary issue. The school's challenges may instead relate to how resources are allocated and the effectiveness of instructional strategies. For parents, Campbell offers a mixed picture: strong advanced math programs and a caring environment, but significant room for improvement in core academic areas, especially when compared to high-performing neighbors like Hamilton Middle or Edward Roberson Middle.

Open Quote I think this school should be a school for kids with behavior problems except the administration would all need to be replaced because the administration does not follow the district code of conduct and have no control over these ignorant violent kids. I have a daughter who is high functioning Autism Spectrum who has always done excellent with her behavior, also she is on honor roll. Recently she has been beaten or jumped by 3 different girls, her Ipone 5 was stolen by a boy in her class, as he bragged about it, her new phone was taken by another student and very vulgar text were sent to one of her close friends. She is teased often. After I told the counselor, vice principal and principal they told me they would investigate but my daughter said these same girls who had beaten her up never had a suspension out of school. I spent the day at the school this month and at lunch a fight broke out in front of me. The school office staff have no knowledge of the fact that the students are out of control and bully other students or maybe they just do not care but my daughter should not have to go to a school where she is scared and has no protection. I complain to the Special Education Coordinator who said the staff thought my daughter was doing great with nomproblems, even though I have been there with my complaints 3 times to all of them and she promised to email me transfer information but never did it. We are now seeking a Catholic School or charter school for hef to attend. Close Quote
