Summary

Bleyl Middle in Houston, TX, serves 1,322 students in grades 6-8 as part of the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District (Isd), with 70.2% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school has experienced a significant decline in overall state ranking over the past decade, dropping from the 71st percentile in 2017-2018 to the 39th percentile in 2025-2026, a 32-percentile-point decrease. This downward trend sets Bleyl apart from nearby schools like Hamilton Middle and Doerre Intermediate, which have maintained consistently high rankings in the 87th-92nd percentile range.

Despite its overall struggles, Bleyl has an exceptional strength in advanced mathematics: 99.09% of students taking the Algebra I End-of-Course exam were proficient in 2025-2026, far exceeding the district average of 64.77% and the state average of 54.03%. This creates a "barbell effect" where a small, high-performing cohort is exceptionally well-served, while the larger student population underperforms in core subjects. For example, only 31.93% of 6th graders were proficient in math versus the district's 45.06%, and only 43.45% of 7th graders were proficient in reading versus the district's 58.47%. The school's Gifted and Talented program ranks in the 74th percentile, but effectiveness for Special Education and English Language Learner students has dropped sharply from the 70th and 61st percentiles in 2023-2024 to the 35th and 31st percentiles in 2025-2026.

Bleyl's closest neighbor, Campbell Middle (1.88 miles away), serves a similarly economically disadvantaged population (85.59% free/reduced lunch) and ranks in the 29th percentile, suggesting that the challenges Bleyl faces are reflective of the immediate community. However, Bleyl's Algebra I program outperforms Campbell's (82.83%) by a wide margin. The school's dropout rate, while still low at 0.9%, has been steadily increasing from 0.4% in 2019-2020, which may correlate with declining academic performance. Nearby schools in Tomball Independent School District (Isd) and Klein Independent School District (Isd), such as Willow Wood J H (95th percentile) and Wunderlich Intermediate, have significantly lower rates of economic disadvantage and higher overall performance.

Open Quote My children DID have some bright spots there (especially an outstanding band director who is an amazing Christian leader for those kiddos), but the shadows of incompetence and self-promotion in that school block out the light. I'm just so sick of teachers who refuse to educate with compassion. High expectations are empty claims if not conducted with humanity and hope. This school is too concerned with outward appearances and C.Y.A. technology fronts. I guess real teaching, with heart and flexibility, is too much work when you're just worried about making your school look good to central office in hopes of a promotion. Just one more day of this craptastic middle school...please, God, just get us to high school and a fresh start. Close Quote

Open Quote Bleyl is an awesome school! Kids are always hugging and high-fiving in the halls. There are lots of clubs and stuff going on after school, even a fashion club. We love our principal, assisant principals, and counselors, and teachers are the best! We all know how important our grades are and the TAKS test! There are lots of pep talks and incentives for us to work hard. I work in the office and it's amazing that the principal knows so many kids by name. If there are some that don't like it, then they won't like anything. Close Quote
