Summary

Barnes Elementary in Corpus Christi, TX, serves approximately 700 students in grades PK-5 and is located in a relatively affluent pocket of the Corpus Christi Independent School District (Isd), with a free/reduced lunch rate of about 52-55%.

Barnes Elementary stands out for its consistent academic performance, ranking in the top 30% of Texas elementary schools over the past decade. Its strongest asset is exceptional 5th-grade mathematics, where 69.81% of students were proficient in 2024-2025—a full 23 percentage points above the district average. This "5th-grade bump" is unique; nearby schools like Jones Elementary actually saw math proficiency decline from 4th to 5th grade. The school also excels at supporting students from low-income backgrounds, ranking in the 88th percentile statewide for this subgroup—a stark contrast to schools like Smith Elementary and Moore Elementary, which have higher poverty rates but lower overall performance. While not the top performer in its area—Creekside Elementary and Faye Webb Elementary rank higher—Barnes achieves strong results with a more diverse socioeconomic student body, making it a balanced and reliable choice.

However, there are areas to watch. Science scores are a relative weakness, with only 28.3% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025, similar to the district average. Additionally, a recent gender gap has emerged: the school ranks in the 81st percentile for female students but only the 69th percentile for male students, a shift from previous years. On the positive side, Barnes operates efficiently, spending $9,936 per student—less than several lower-performing nearby schools like Club Estates and Cullen Place Elementary—while delivering above-average results.

Open Quote Absolutely love this school. They have put so much effort in with my kids. They never gave up. I moved my kids after 1 year at a different Elementary here in Corpus that I was completely disappointed in. My kids have learned way more than I ever could have expected. The teachers are so reasonable when it comes to meeting with me and take the time to talk to my children and I if need be. The staff, school, and education is amazing here. Close Quote
