Summary

Akins Early College High School is a large, comprehensive high school in South Austin, TX, serving 2,421 students in grades 9-12 as part of the Austin Independent School District (Isd). Over the past decade, the school has seen a significant decline in its state ranking, dropping from the 61st percentile in 2015-2016 to a consistent pattern in the 27th-29th percentile over the last five years, placing it in the bottom third of Texas high schools. While the school maintains a strong graduation rate above 92%, its academic performance on state assessments is a major concern, consistently lagging behind both district and state averages.

The most striking differentiator is Akins' consistent underperformance on standardized tests compared to nearby high-performing schools. For example, Bowie High School (4.3 miles away) had proficiency rates nearly double or triple those of Akins in core subjects like English I Reading (84.09% vs. 44.78%) and Biology (89.53% vs. 56.45%) in the 2025-2026 school year. Similarly, Moe And Gene Johnson High School (6.5 miles away) significantly outperformed Akins in the same subjects. Akins' performance in Algebra I is exceptionally low, with only 20.59% of students proficient, less than half the district average of 51.77%. The school is part of a cluster of lower-performing schools in the area, including Crockett Early College High School, suggesting shared challenges related to serving a high-needs student population.

Despite its "Early College" designation, which typically implies rigorous coursework and college credit opportunities, Akins' academic outcomes do not reflect this label. The school's low overall ranking is heavily driven by the performance of its economically disadvantaged students, who make up over 63% of the enrollment. While White students rank in the 60th percentile statewide, low socio-economic status students rank in the 27th percentile, revealing a significant internal achievement gap. This creates a concerning "graduation gap": the school successfully graduates students at a high rate, but many may not be academically prepared for college or career, as evidenced by low test scores. The school's ranking has plateaued in the high 20s over the last five years, indicating a new, lower baseline for performance that suggests systemic issues have not been effectively addressed.

Open Quote I have taught at 7 schools in my career and none had the dedicated teachers that I have found at Akins High School. There is a lot of turn over each year because the student population is so challenging, but there is a core of teachers who catch up the new arrivals to the Akins way of reaching every kid.
