Summary

Kocurek Elementary is a PK-5 school in Austin, TX, serving 507 students in the Austin Independent School District (Isd), located in the 78748 zip code with a favorable 12:1 student-to-teacher ratio.

Kocurek is a school of stark contrasts, where academic performance varies dramatically among different student groups. While the school's overall state ranking is in the 40th percentile, its White students perform exceptionally well, ranking in the 77th percentile statewide—a level that surpasses the overall rankings of nearby schools like Boone Elementary (56th percentile) and Casey Elementary (77th percentile). However, Hispanic and economically disadvantaged students rank much lower, in the 12th and 25th percentiles respectively. This internal achievement gap is far more pronounced than at nearby Cowan Elementary (0.75 miles away, 71st percentile overall), which performs well across all student groups. Additionally, male students have seen a sharp decline, dropping from the 45th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 22nd percentile in 2025-2026.

On a positive note, Kocurek’s bilingual program is a standout within the district. In 3rd-grade Spanish Reading, the school achieved 40% proficiency—nearly double the district average of 20.4%—and in Spanish Math, 20% proficiency compared to the district’s 7.59%. However, these scores still trail state averages. In core subjects, Kocurek’s 3rd-grade Reading (35.71%) and Math (29.09%) proficiency rates are significantly lower than nearby schools like Cunningham Elementary (66% and 54.9% respectively) and Kiker Elementary (56.52% in Math). The school’s per-student spending ($10,782) is mid-range compared to neighbors, suggesting that the challenge is not just funding but how resources are used to support all learners effectively.

Open Quote I am grateful and elated to be a part of the Kocurek elementary community. The teachers, staff, principal - all people I consider wonderful additions to my community and my children's lives. Families come together here at Kocurek and make the entire school year great. Plus, my kids are learning every single day academically, socially, and growing into fine young people. SO PROUD TO BE A KOCUREK FAMILY! Close Quote

Open Quote I recently visited this school during an observation and the staff there are some of THE rudest people I've had to deal with. I waited for about 5 minutes for one lady to acknowledge the question I was asking out loud. It was very irritating. Although, the're were a lot of great teachers who are genuinely concerned about the children's learning. Close Quote

Open Quote Some of the teachers are amazing. Although, office staff is some of the most rude people. I had a simple question, stood at the counter for a few minutes, while the clerk in front of me, sitting at her desk would not even acknowledge me. When I was finally helped, my question was treated as though it was a waste of her time to answer my question. The more help I needed, the more irritated the office clerk got. Not a place I would leave my child. Close Quote

Open Quote I recently visited this school to observe for a day, and I was very impressed by the hospitality of the faculty and staff, and the encouragement of the teachers within the school. The students have obviously been taught to be respectful of themselves, and others, and it was really an amazing and inspiring place to be. Close Quote
