Summary

Norman-Sims Elementary is a public elementary school in Austin, Texas, serving 275 students in grades PK-5. It is part of the Austin Independent School District, which is ranked 578 out of 961 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Norman-Sims Elementary consistently ranks in the bottom 10% of Texas elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on STAAR assessments across all grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2024-2025, only 17.86% of 3rd graders were proficient in STAAR Reading, compared to 58.14% for the district and 52.02% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low in mathematics, with only 15-25% of students achieving proficiency in 3rd-5th grade STAAR Math. This is likely due to a combination of factors, including the school's high percentage of economically disadvantaged students (92-96%) and the fluctuating student-teacher ratio, which has ranged from 11.8 to 19.8 students per teacher.

Interestingly, the nearby Blanton Elementary, which is also within the Austin ISD district, performs significantly better than Norman-Sims, with proficiency rates that are often double or triple those of the struggling school. This suggests that the challenges faced by Norman-Sims Elementary may be a broader issue within the district, particularly in the immediate geographic area, as other nearby schools like Pecan Springs Elementary, Govalle Elementary, and Oak Springs Elementary also perform poorly on academic measures.

Open Quote Up until last year I would have given Norman 1 star. However; since the introduction of our new principal, Floretta Andrews, the school has made a complete turn-around. I cannot tell you how happy I am to have my kids in a school run by her. She is there to hear the parents concerns 100% of the time- something I NEVER experienced prior to her coming. I am excited to see just how far our school will be able to go throught the coming years! Close Quote
