Summary

Lamar Middle in Austin, TX, is a high-performing public school serving 1,109 students in grades 6-8 within the Austin Independent School District (Isd), consistently ranking in the top 10% of Texas middle schools and earning a 5-star rating for five consecutive years.

Lamar stands out for its exceptional academic performance, particularly in advanced mathematics. In the 2025-2026 school year, nearly 95% of its students taking the Algebra I End-of-Course exam were proficient—almost double the state average. This strength in math is part of a broader pattern of excellence across core subjects like reading, social studies, and 8th-grade math, where proficiency rates significantly outpace district and state averages. While nearby schools like Kealing Middle and Murchison Middle also perform well, Lamar’s consistent, well-rounded achievement places it in a different league from many neighboring schools, such as Burnet Middle and Webb Middle, which struggle to reach state averages. Notably, Lamar is exceptionally effective at supporting its Special Education students, ranking in the 97th percentile statewide, though it faces challenges in closing achievement gaps for English Language Learners and economically disadvantaged students.

A key insight for parents is the "7th-grade math slump" observed across all schools in the area, where math proficiency drops dramatically from 6th to 7th grade. At Lamar, this likely reflects that many advanced students are "pulled out" to take Algebra I, leaving a less proficient cohort in standard 7th-grade math. This pattern reverses in 8th grade, with proficiency jumping to over 70%. Overall, Lamar offers a strong, inclusive academic environment with a very low dropout rate, making it a top choice for families seeking a consistently excellent middle school experience in Austin.

Open Quote Lamar is not as bad as these reviews say. The children that go there would never want to leave willingly. So shouldn't we care about our children's feeling about the school more than these reporters who are doing this to get money? Close Quote

Open Quote I love this neighborhood school. There are active parents, excellent teachers, strong pre-AP classes, and the new principal is strengthening the curriculum to align it with the most difficult classes McCallum offers, including offering Algebra I for advanced 7th and 8th grade students. The Fine Arts classes are outstanding and there is a lot of excitement with the new Fine Arts Academy. Most importantly, my son enjoys school and is learning a lot. I feel that he is being amply prepared for high school and college. Close Quote

Open Quote I went to Lamar Middle School for my 6-8 grade years. I think this is a terrific school, even though it may have it's flaws but not every school is perfect. The teachers there do know what they're talking about and are excellent with children. The Fine Arts program there is AMAZING. In fact, Lamar is now a Fine Arts Academy. But I must say, the people in the front office are just horrible. They seem to loose everything. But overall Lamar is still a pretty awesome school with some awesome teachers and programs. Open Quote The 8th grade algebra class is an important class for any
middle school. A middle school is obligated to put its best effort
for this class. This school year , 2008-2009, Lamar's algebra class is at best poor.
I think that the principal needs to be held accountable in this case.
