Summary

Cook Elementary is a PK-5 public school in the Austin Independent School District (Isd) serving 433 students in a high-poverty area, where over 94% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. The school has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.5:1, but its state ranking has dropped sharply from the 50th percentile in 2021-2022 to the 15th percentile in 2025-2026, placing it among the lower-performing schools in Texas.

A notable strength is Cook's 3rd-grade Spanish Reading scores, where 42.31% of students are proficient—significantly outperforming the district (20.4%) and state (28.3%) averages. However, this is overshadowed by a critical weakness in 5th-grade Math, where only 10.34% of students are proficient, the lowest rate among all nearby AISD schools like McBee Elementary (33.33%) and Wooldridge Elementary (34.78%). The school previously excelled at serving "At Risk" students, ranking in the 87th percentile in 2021-2022, but this strength has eroded, with performance for low-income and Hispanic students dropping to the 3rd and 2nd percentiles by 2024-2025.

Cook's challenges are not due to lack of funding, as it spends over $12,000 per student—more than the nearby high-performing Harmony School Of Science - Austin ($9,927 per student). A stark contrast exists with Guerrero Thompson, just 1.25 miles away, which serves a similar high-poverty population but achieves far better results, including 76.47% proficiency in 5th-grade Reading versus Cook's 32.26%. This proves that improvement is possible, and Cook's leadership must urgently investigate the root causes of its recent decline while looking to successful local models for strategies to reverse its trajectory.

Open Quote If you are a caring/involved parent, avoid Cook Elementary. Every adult entering the school is treated like a criminal. You may not walk your child to class, or even retrieve something left behind without being interrogated by at least 11 harpies along the way. Procedures are unnecessarily militaristic, and largely inefficient at that.
Tax dollars at waste here. Close Quote
