Summary

Barnett J H is a middle school in the Arlington Independent School District (Isd) serving 579 students in grades 7 and 8, located in a community where over 80% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. This school is a study in contrasts: it achieves world-class results in advanced coursework while many students struggle with foundational subjects. For example, in the 2025-2026 school year, Barnett posted a stunning 100% proficiency rate in Biology and 96.67% in Algebra I End-of-Course exams, far exceeding the state averages of 70.51% and 54.03%, respectively. However, only 10.13% of 7th graders were proficient in standard math, well below the state average of 29.41%. This creates a "pipeline" effect where a select group of students excels dramatically, but the majority face significant challenges.

Barnett stands out for its exceptional support of English Language Learners, ranking in the 77th percentile statewide with a 4-star rating. Yet, the school has experienced a troubling collapse in its Special Education program, dropping from the 86th percentile in 2023-2024 to the 9th percentile in 2025-2026—a change that warrants immediate attention from parents. Compared to nearby schools, Barnett's advanced course performance rivals top-tier institutions like Danny Jones Middle in Mansfield Independent School District (Isd), which also scores high in Algebra I (94.64%). However, Danny Jones dramatically outperforms Barnett in standard subjects, such as 53.65% proficiency in 7th-grade math versus Barnett's 10.13%. Meanwhile, Ousley J H, just 1.58 miles away, is a higher-performing school overall (65th percentile) but matches Barnett in advanced Algebra I.

Barnett's overall ranking has been volatile, peaking at the 63rd percentile in 2016-2017 before dropping to the 22nd percentile in 2022-2023 and recovering to the 35th percentile in 2025-2026. This instability, combined with the dramatic swings in subgroup performance, suggests a school in transition. While Barnett's per-student spending of $10,724 is moderate, it achieves remarkable results in advanced courses, indicating effective resource allocation for its top programs. For parents, the key takeaway is that Barnett offers an exceptional environment for students ready for advanced coursework and strong support for English Language Learners, but families should carefully investigate the school's ability to support students in standard 7th-grade math and its recent decline in Special Education services.

Open Quote This school does a horrendous job at controlling their students. The amount of bullying that happens on a daily basis is disgusting and the lack of response from administration is worse. The teachers are good, but they can only be good for so long before they burn out. The administration needs to step up. It is embarrassing what they turn a blind eye too. It's also hard to get through to the office staff to report an absent student. They are rude on the phone and short with parents.
I regret sending my children to this school.
