Summary

Short Elementary is a PK-6 school in the Arlington Independent School District (Isd) serving 406 students in a predominantly low-income community, where over 82% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has faced significant academic challenges, ranking in the 8th percentile statewide—its lowest point in recent years—and consistently landing in the bottom 20-30% of Texas elementary schools over the past decade.

While Short Elementary has a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 12.6:1 and per-student spending of $10,914, these resources have not translated into strong outcomes. Nearby schools with similar demographics, like Burgin Elementary (90.73% free/reduced lunch) and South Davis Elementary (90.58%), rank in the 20th and 30th percentiles, respectively, showing that poverty is not destiny. In contrast, higher-performing neighbors like Duff Elementary (81st percentile) and Hill Elementary (62nd percentile) serve more affluent populations. The school's most critical internal issue is a severe and worsening gender gap: female students rank in the 19th percentile, while male students rank in the 3rd percentile—a 16-point gap that has widened significantly in recent years.

Despite these challenges, Short Elementary has shown flashes of potential. In the 2023-2024 school year, its 6th grade class achieved 59.38% proficiency in Reading and 53.13% in Math, outperforming district averages, though this success was not sustained the following year. Science remains a critical weakness, with only 7.55% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025. Nearby charter schools like Arlington Classics Academy - Arkansas Campus (74th-83rd percentile) and Newman International Academy Of Arlington (49th percentile) significantly outperform Short, highlighting the educational inequality within the same geographic area.

Open Quote These stats are damning. 47th out of 52 elementary schools despite being in a better neighborhood?

I bet it's has a lot to do with how incredibly horrible the administration is. Culture begins at the top and rotten apples keep spoiling the whole barrel year after year.

B and W need to go and maybe the school could finally get above an F rating with the state. Why does the district ignore bad results and teachers who quit like rats from a ship?

When will the state step in? Close Quote
