Summary

Arlington High School is a large, traditional public high school in the Arlington Independent School District (Isd), serving over 2,500 students in grades 9-12 in a community where about two-thirds of students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Academically, Arlington High occupies a middle ground within the district. It consistently outperforms nearby Sam Houston High School and Lamar High School in most subjects—for instance, its English I Reading proficiency is more than double that of Sam Houston. However, it is dramatically outperformed by the smaller, specialized Arlington College And Career High School, which achieves 80-93% proficiency in the same subjects. The school has a notable strength in Biology and U.S. History, where it exceeds the district average, but faces a persistent challenge in Algebra I, where proficiency rates have hovered around 15-25%—roughly half the district average and less than half the state average. This Algebra I barrier is the single biggest factor holding the school back.

An interesting finding is that the school's Gifted and Talented program ranks in the bottom 14th percentile statewide, suggesting the school may not be adequately challenging its highest-achieving students. Overall, Arlington High has declined from a solid 3-star rating before the pandemic to a consistent 2-star rating since 2021, and has stabilized at this lower performance level without yet showing signs of recovery. For parents, this school offers a traditional high school experience with some academic bright spots, but the math struggles and the underperformance of advanced learners are important factors to consider when comparing options in the district.

Open Quote Go to the City of Arlington's 4th of July parade and you will see which school has the PRIDE and COMRADERY. Even if not on this day, look around, how many green and white horse shoe stickers do you see on the cars. Yep, HOW SWEET IT IS TO BE IN COLT COUNRTY. One of the best highschools, maybe the oldest and outdated, but nothing can compare to their pride. Close Quote
