Summary

Bush Elementary in Houston, TX, serves 780 students from Pre-K through 4th grade in the Alief Independent School District (Isd), with over 90% of students coming from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom quartile of Texas elementary schools over the past decade, currently holding a 1-star rating and ranking in the 11th percentile statewide, despite spending slightly above the district average per student ($12,734) and maintaining a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.9:1.

Bush Elementary shows a clear relative strength in Reading compared to Mathematics, with 4th-grade Reading scores (50%) nearly 20 percentage points higher than 4th-grade Math scores (30.83%) in the most recent year. The school also consistently outperforms the state average in the STAAR Spanish Reading test for 4th graders, a unique strength compared to nearby schools like Sneed Elementary and Collins Elementary, which often fall below the state average in this metric. However, performance for Special Education students has been a critical concern, ranking in the 4th percentile statewide in 2023-2024, though it improved to the 25th percentile in 2025-2026.

When compared to nearby schools with similar demographics, Bush Elementary underperforms significantly. Chancellor Elementary, just 1.5 miles away with 89% free/reduced lunch, consistently outperforms Bush in overall state ranking (27th vs. 11th percentile) and in core subjects like 3rd-grade Reading (41.35% proficient vs. 27.59%). The Harmony School Of Exploration- Houston, a charter school serving a similar demographic, ranks in the 70th percentile statewide and scores 20-30 percentage points higher in nearly every subject, demonstrating what is achievable with a similar student body. Notably, Bush spends more per student than both of these higher-performing schools, suggesting that the performance gap may be related to how resources are utilized rather than a lack of funding.

Open Quote I do want to share some thoughts on this school. I am the mother of 5 and grandmother of 10- I am an EMT and I also have a BS in psychology. Over the years I have seen alot of schools and dealt with school programs, sporting events- all the usual stuff. I have two grandchildren in this school. I AM APALLED AT THIS SCHOOL AND THE TREATMENT OF THEIR STUDENTS! The Christmas program, was unbelievable!. Not all the students were allowed to participate- only a random choosen few! Elementry students! That is ridiculous! Then to continue on their selective position, my grandson, was not allowed to participate in his classroom christmas party! We see in the media a concern for bullying in our school systems- well- how horrible is it then, when the school teachers and principles are the ones doing the bullying! What psychological damage are they doing, singling children out at this age, making them cry and to the point, when taken to a laywer, the child cries, because he is afraid of the teachers, the system and other students. Where the TAX PAID SYSTEM is failing to provide him with not only an education, but even a safe learning atmosphere! Close Quote
