Summary

Heflin Elementary is a K-4 school in Houston, TX, serving 501 students within the Alief Independent School District (Isd), and it is currently facing significant academic challenges despite having a low student-to-teacher ratio of 10.8:1 and spending in line with nearby schools.

Heflin's academic performance has declined sharply, dropping from the 33rd percentile in 2018-2019 to the 8th percentile in 2025-2026, placing it in the bottom 10% of Texas elementary schools. This decline is most severe in mathematics, where only 18.82% of 3rd graders and 22.99% of 4th graders were proficient in 2025-2026—roughly half the state average. A particularly urgent issue is a new and dramatic gender gap: the school now ranks in the 20th percentile for female students but only the 2nd percentile for male students, a stark reversal from two years prior when it ranked higher for boys. This suggests a recent, acute challenge in effectively educating its male student population.

Comparisons to nearby schools highlight that Heflin's struggles are not inevitable. Sst Advancement, a charter school within a mile serving a similarly high-needs population (89.78% free/reduced lunch), ranks in the 66th percentile and achieves dramatically better results, with 4th-grade math proficiency at 47.76% compared to Heflin's 22.99%. Heflin also underperforms its Alief ISD peers like Outley Elementary (33rd percentile) and Mahanay Elementary (29th percentile), despite having a lower student-to-teacher ratio. With per-student spending ($11,202) in line with higher-performing schools, the data suggests the school's challenges are not due to a lack of resources but rather how they are utilized, pointing to a need for targeted instructional improvements, especially in math and for male students.

Open Quote Overcrowded, understaffed boot-camp-type school. GT students are not challeged due to lack of teachers. Children get screamed at a lot, their spirits crushed and embarrased in front of peers, teachers and visitors. This coming year I will bite the bullet so my children can go to private school.
