Summary

Mahanay Elementary is a public elementary school in Houston, Texas, serving grades PK-4 with a total enrollment of 576 students. The school is part of the Alief Independent School District, which is ranked 743 out of 961 districts in Texas and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Mahanay Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Texas elementary schools, with a ranking between 1,488 and 3,569 out of around 4,600 schools over the past 10 years. The school's performance on STAAR tests is generally below the district and state averages, particularly in mathematics. For example, in 2024-2025, only 25% of 3rd graders and 33.33% of 4th graders were proficient or better in STAAR Mathematics, compared to 44.88% and 45.79% statewide, respectively. The school has a higher percentage of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds, with 86.57% to 91.49% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch over the past three years, compared to the state average of around 60%.

Compared to the nearby schools in the Alief ISD, such as Alief Montessori Community School, Outley Elementary, and Alexander Elementary, Mahanay Elementary generally performs worse on STAAR tests and has a higher percentage of economically disadvantaged students. However, the school's student-teacher ratio is lower, and its per-student spending is higher, which could indicate a focus on providing additional resources and support to students.

Open Quote I think the teachers are to quick to accuse children and send them to the office. When they go to the office it is all day and they have to repeat the same work over and over again. This school does not participate in field trips. Have 1 family function year. They do not participate in parties but 2 a year. Can not bring cupcakes for a childs birthday. Suggest that your child needs medicine. PTO money goes to teacher bonuses. They do not teach cursive. They spend the whole year studying for the task test and learning the answers before they can read the question. Close Quote
