Summary

Shotwell Middle in Houston, TX, serves 832 students in grades 6-8 within the Aldine Independent School District (Isd), and is located in a community where 84% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch.

Shotwell Middle presents a unique "two schools" dynamic. While overall academic performance is low—with the school ranking in the bottom 15th percentile statewide for six consecutive years—its advanced math program is a standout. Students taking the Algebra I End-of-Course exam achieve proficiency rates of 80-95%, which is roughly double the state average and far exceeds nearby schools. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, Shotwell's Algebra I proficiency was 95.4%, compared to the district average of 38.19%. This suggests a highly effective, targeted program for advanced math students, even as the majority of students struggle to meet grade-level standards in reading, math, and science. The school also maintains a lower dropout rate than the district average and has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.6:1, which is lower than nearby Garcia Middle (13.1:1) and Plummer Middle (13.1:1).

For context, Edward Roberson Middle, located just 2.73 miles away in the Spring Independent School District (Isd), serves a similar demographic but is a 5-star school with proficiency rates in the 70-90% range. This stark contrast highlights that the challenges at Shotwell are not solely tied to socioeconomic factors. Meanwhile, the three Aldine ISD middle schools in the area—Shotwell, Garcia, and Plummer—all rank in the bottom 25th percentile, suggesting systemic issues within the district's approach to middle school education in this part of Houston.

Open Quote I BEEN HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THIS SCHOOL SINCE MY KIDS STARTED IN 2010. ALMOST THE WHOLE STAFF IS UNPROFESSIONAL. THEY PURNISH KIDS FOR EVERY LITTLE THING. THEY ACT LIKE THEY DON'T WANT THE KIDS TO HAVE A GOOD EDUCATION. THE TEACHERS IS RUDED AND CURSE AT THE KIDS. IF YOUR CHILD NEEDS HELP WITH SCHOOL WORK AND ASK THE TEACHERS FOR HELP, THE TEACHERS GET AN ATTITUDE. I NEVER EXPERIENCE THIS BEFORE AND REGRET EVER SENDING MY KIDS THERE. I WAS TOLD THAT I CAN'T TAKE MY KIDS OUT BECAUSE I LIVE IN THE SCHOOL ZONE AND THIS IS THEIR NEW LAW. NOW THEY DO HAVE VERY LITTLE TEACHERS THERE WHO CARE ABOUT THE KIDS EDUCATIONS BUT THEY ALL SCARE TO SAY SOMETHING BECAUSE THEY MIGHT LOSE THEIR JOB. NOW I'M FORCE TO GIVE UP MY HOUSE AND MOVE SOMEWHERE MY KIDS CAN HAVE A GREAT EDUCATION. I HOPE THAT THEY GET A NEW PRINCIPLE AND GET RID OF THE TEACHERS WHO DON'T CARE ABOUT THE KIDS EDUCATION AND JUST THERE FOR A CHECK. PURNISHING KIDS FOR EVERYTHING THAT'S NOT IMPORTANT INSTEAD OF FINDING A SOLULATIONS TO HELP THEM IS NOT RIGHT. Close Quote
