Summary

Eisenhower High School in Houston, TX, is a large comprehensive high school serving over 2,200 students in grades 9-12 within the Aldine Independent School District (Isd), where more than 86% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has historically ranked in the bottom 15-20% of Texas high schools, and while it has shown some recent improvement, it still significantly underperforms compared to both district and state averages in core subjects like Algebra I and English I Reading, where only about 28% of students are proficient.

What makes Eisenhower's situation particularly striking is the contrast with nearby schools in the same district that serve similar demographics but achieve vastly different results. For example, Victory Early College High School and Blanson Cte High School rank in the 98th and 96th percentiles statewide, respectively, with near-perfect Algebra I proficiency rates and graduation rates above 99%. Eisenhower's graduation rate of 80% and dropout rate of 5.1% are far worse than these peers, highlighting a significant opportunity gap within the same community. Interestingly, Eisenhower's per-student spending is actually higher than at these high-performing schools, suggesting that funding alone is not the issue.

Despite these challenges, there are pockets of excellence at Eisenhower. Its Gifted and Talented students rank in the 86th percentile statewide, and Multi-racial students rank in the 97th percentile, indicating that effective programs exist for some groups. The school has also shown improvement in subjects like Biology and U.S. History in recent years. However, the success of nearby schools like Victory and Blanson proves that high poverty does not have to mean low performance, making Eisenhower's continued struggles a critical issue for the Aldine ISD to address.

Open Quote I graduated in 1974, and all I can say is this place was nothing more than a survival camp. Anyone who attempted to anything constructive academically was on their own.

I pity those who followed. Close Quote
