Summary

Jean Massieu Academy in Arlington, TX (76011) is a small, alternative public school serving just 185 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, operating as its own single-school district with a high level of economic disadvantage (over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch).

This school stands out for its exceptionally low student-to-teacher ratio of 11.5:1, which is much smaller than nearby schools like Great Hearts Arlington (19.2:1) and Advantage Academy (19.4:1), suggesting a more personalized learning environment. Historically, Jean Massieu Academy has achieved perfect or near-perfect graduation rates (100% for four of the last five years) and a 0% dropout rate for four of the last five years, outperforming its closest geographic neighbor, Trinity Leadership, which has a slightly higher student-to-teacher ratio (13.6:1) and lower Algebra I proficiency (25% vs. Jean Massieu's 80% in 2025-2026). However, the 2023-2024 school year saw a significant dip, with the graduation rate dropping to 71.4% and the dropout rate rising to 2.7%, a critical area for concern.

Academically, the school presents a "high-risk, high-reward" profile: while test scores in core subjects like 3rd-grade reading and math were 0% proficient in 2025-2026, it excels in advanced math, with 80% of students proficient in Algebra I—far exceeding the state average of 54.03% and all nearby schools. This suggests the school is highly effective for students who reach advanced coursework but struggles with younger students. The Jean Massieu Academy district spends $9,509 per student, less than Idea Public Schools ($14,915) but more than Advantage Academy ($8,087), indicating a strategic focus on staffing to support its high-needs population.

Open Quote In the past ASL was strong impacted to use in JMA. All teachers could communicate in ASL but not anymore. Right now it is open in public and more students enroll that does not have any knowledge in sign language. More teachers work there and they do not sign well either. JMA used to focus on deaf or coda children with teacher that speaks sign language. Tragic how things changed so much!! Close Quote
