Summary

Heston Edward School is an elementary school in Philadelphia, PA that serves grades PK-8 and is part of the Philadelphia City School District. The school has consistently ranked in the bottom 5% of Pennsylvania elementary schools over the past decade, with a 0-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Heston Edward School significantly underperforms compared to the district and state on standardized tests, with only 3.7% of students proficient or better in PSSA Math and 11.9% proficient in English Language Arts, far below the district and state averages. The school also struggles to effectively serve its subgroups, ranking in the bottom 25% of Pennsylvania elementary schools for African American students, low socioeconomic status students, and both male and female students. Additionally, Heston Edward School has had high dropout rates in recent years, ranging from 0.0% to 5.5%, which are significantly higher than the district and state averages.

While Heston Edward School spends significantly more per student ($29,011 in 2022-2023) compared to the district and state averages, this has not translated to improved academic outcomes. Nearby Philadelphia City School District schools, such as Blankenburg Rudolph School, Overbrook Elementary School, and Rhoads James School, also perform poorly on standardized tests, suggesting a broader systemic issue within the district. In contrast, the charter schools in the area, such as Mastery Charter School - Mann Campus, Global Leadership Academy Charter School, Discovery Charter School, and KIPP West Philadelphia Charter School, generally outperform Heston Edward School and the other district schools on academic measures.
