Summary

Marva J Daniel Futures Preparatory School is an elementary school serving grades PK-8 in the Buffalo City School District, with 424 students. Despite increased spending per student and a low student-teacher ratio, the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of New York elementary schools over the past decade, underperforming both the district and state averages in English Language Arts (ELA) and math proficiency.

The school's academic challenges are particularly pronounced for certain student subgroups, such as Hispanic and Special Education students, who rank near the bottom of New York elementary schools in ELA. However, the school performs relatively better for English Language Learner (ELL) students, suggesting that targeted interventions can be effective in improving outcomes. Nearby schools in the Buffalo City School District, such as Stanley Makowski Early Childhood Center and Harriet Ross Tubman Academy, also struggle academically, with proficiency rates well below the state averages. In contrast, some nearby charter schools, like Reach Academy Charter School and Enterprise Charter School, show slightly better academic performance, particularly in math.

The school's consistently low performance, despite increased resources, suggests that factors beyond just funding, such as school leadership, curriculum, and teacher quality, may be contributing to the academic challenges. Addressing these issues will likely require a multifaceted approach that focuses on targeted interventions and a deeper understanding of the unique needs of the school's student population.

Open Quote This school is an unsafe place for children. The building is falling apart, the playground is covered in litter, and the administration staff are hostile and distant. No one looks happy during dismissal: students or staff. Constant student fights, daily. If you have any other option, take it! This is not where any child should go. Close Quote
