Summary

PS 82 Hammond is an elementary school located in Jamaica, New York, serving 613 students from kindergarten to 5th grade. It is part of the New York City Geographic District #28, which is ranked 373 out of 874 districts in the state.

Despite the school's relatively high spending per student, ranging from $17,524 to $32,044, and low student-teacher ratio of 11.5 to 13 students per teacher, PS 82 Hammond has consistently underperformed compared to the district and the state in English Language Arts (ELA) and Math proficiency rates across grades 3-5. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school's 3rd grade ELA proficiency rate was 29.7%, compared to 66.02% for the district and 54.15% for the state. The school's performance is particularly low for Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Special Education student subgroups, ranking in the bottom 30-40% of schools in the state for these groups.

Interestingly, the nearby schools, such as PS 182 Samantha Smith, PS 86, and PS 54 Hillside, generally outperform PS 82 Hammond in academic proficiency rates, especially in the higher-performing grades, despite having similar demographics in terms of free and reduced lunch rates. This suggests that there may be opportunities for PS 82 Hammond to learn from more successful schools in the area and implement strategies to improve academic performance.

Open Quote The new art teacher Ms. Quevez was really excellent. My child couldn’t stop talking about her and the projects he was excited to do. They used a lot of different things like paint, and even aluminum foil. I haven’t seen my son use paint in school even when he was in kindergarten! She also did this class every Friday which my 1st grader loved! She was so excited on Fridays and couldn’t wait. She learned a lot about cultures, and places around the world and about things like that which I think is very important. My kids were excited to go back in person this year. I hope she’s there again this year. The other teachers are very nice as well. Close Quote
