Summary

Central Park East I is a high-performing elementary school in New York City's District 4, serving 156 students in grades PK-5. Central Park East I's strong academic performance is further highlighted when compared to nearby schools. For example, Ps 108 Assemblyman Angelo Del Toro Educational Complex and Mosaic Preparatory Academy have significantly lower proficiency rates in both ELA and Math. However, the nearby Tag Young Scholars, a public magnet school, outperforms Central Park East I in almost all academic metrics, suggesting that the magnet school model may be particularly effective in this area.

Despite the school's academic success, it serves a population with a significant economic need, with 44.1% to 50.29% of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch. The school's investment in per-student spending, which has increased from $20,922 in 2020-2021 to $33,515 in 2023-2024, and its relatively low student-teacher ratio, ranging from 12.3 to 14.4 over the past few years, may contribute to its strong performance. Overall, Central Park East I stands out as a high-performing elementary school in the district, offering a quality education to its diverse student population.

Open Quote This is a wonderful school. The numbers reflect the two difficult years the school community went through due to an abusive principal. That principal is thankfully gone now, and the school is recovering from the damage she inflicted.
The pedagogy and the work in each classroom are truly outstanding. This is a school that still serves as a model of progressive excellence to many in the US and around the world, and rightfully so. Come to visit and see for yourself. Close Quote

Open Quote The teachers and staff at Central Park East I believe that children "learn through experiencing". In addition to their regular studies students have 'project time' and often visit natural environments that take them outside the classroom.

There is a sense that the teachers understand that every child is unique, may learn differently, and will some day make a special contribution to their community and to the world.

The staff and teachers are intelligent, warm, loving human beings who respect children and seem geniunely proud to be educators.

They put children first. I love this school. Close Quote
