East Side Community School

Public, Magnet Grades 6-12
Summary

East Side Community School is a public magnet high school serving grades 6-12 in New York City's District 1, with 695 students located in the East Village neighborhood of Manhattan. The school's performance has fluctuated over the years, ranging from a high 5-star rating in 2015-2016 to a low 2-star rating in recent years.

East Side Community School's key metrics show some areas of concern. Its 4-year graduation rates have varied widely, from a high of 94.7% in 2023-2024 to a low of 71.3% in 2022-2023, which is notable compared to the more consistent graduation rates of nearby schools like Gramercy Arts High School and International High School At Union Square. Additionally, East Side Community School's math proficiency lags behind the district and state, and its chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 17.1% to 48.7%, are significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Despite these challenges, East Side Community School serves a higher proportion of economically disadvantaged students, with 66-70% of its students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch. By addressing attendance issues, improving math instruction, and implementing best practices from higher-performing nearby schools, the school can work towards providing a more consistent, high-quality education for its diverse student population.

Open Quote I go to ESCHS, and I can personally say this is a really good school! The teachers are amazing and classes are run smoothly. You don't even need high grades to get in! I believe you need a 3-3.5 average to get in. Close Quote
