Summary

Lyndale Elementary is a public elementary school in Minneapolis, Minnesota, serving 404 students in grades PK-5. The school is part of the Minneapolis Public School District, which is ranked 300 out of 446 districts in the state and has a 2-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Lyndale Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom half of Minnesota elementary schools, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past 10 years. The school's academic performance is particularly concerning, with students underperforming the district and state averages in both math and reading proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 28.65% of Lyndale students were proficient or better in math, compared to 35.79% for the district and 45.21% for the state. The school's performance is especially low for its Hispanic and English language learner students, who rank in the bottom 10-20% of Minnesota elementary schools in both subjects.

One potential factor contributing to Lyndale Elementary's academic challenges is its high percentage of students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds, with 72.52% of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch in the 2023-2024 school year. This is significantly higher than nearby schools like Cosmos Montessori (26.09%) and Barton Elementary (31.23%), which have much lower percentages of students from low-income families. However, the proximity of Lyndale to other Minneapolis public schools may present opportunities for collaboration and resource sharing to help improve the educational outcomes at the school.

Open Quote If you want to decide how good a school is by reading test scores and percentages of free/reduced lunches, this is the website for you. And good luck to your kids. If you want to figure out if any particular school is right for your kid, get off your couch and tour the school. That's what I did. And I fell in love with Lyndale during my tour. The energy, the diversity, the community. All of it. While any school can provide the academic requirements, only schools like Lyndale truly teach our children about the world. And you can't put a "ranking" on that. Come see for yourself. Your kids will be glad you did! Close Quote

Open Quote We love Lyndale and feel it was the best possible choice we could make for our kids. Lyndale is hidden gem with an incredibly dedicated team of teacher and school leadership, plus a very involved parent community. Ranking the school based only on test scores is deeply unfair. Test scores are influenced by who is in the school. This is a very diverse school with a high number of English Language Learners, so clearly the test scores are not going to be as high as an all white school in the burbs. What matters more is how much progress kids in the school make every year - on that Lyndale is one of the strongest school in the district. My kids teachers have done a great job of teaching to students at all levels in the classroom, and everyone benefits from the very low student to teacher ratio! Close Quote
