Summary

Frederick Douglass High is a public magnet high school located in Upper Marlboro, Maryland, serving grades 9-12 with a total enrollment of 1,182 students. It is part of the Prince George's County Public Schools district, which is ranked 22 out of 25 districts in Maryland and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Frederick Douglass High consistently outperforms the Prince George's County and Maryland state averages in English Language Arts (ELA) proficiency, particularly in 10th grade where the school's proficiency rate is around 60-66% compared to the county's 45-47% and the state's 53-60%. However, the school struggles significantly in mathematics, with only around 7% proficiency compared to the county's 10-13% and the state's 23-27%. The school's 4-year graduation rate is around 80%, on par with the surrounding schools but lower than the state's overall high school graduation rate. Additionally, the school has a higher dropout rate and chronic absenteeism rate compared to the state averages.

While Frederick Douglass High has some strengths, it faces significant challenges in areas like mathematics, graduation rates, and chronic absenteeism. The school's performance appears to be declining over time, and it may benefit from a closer examination of the factors contributing to this trend. Nearby magnet schools like the Academy of Health Sciences at PGCC and Largo High perform significantly better in both ELA and mathematics proficiency, suggesting that the magnet program at Frederick Douglass High may need to be evaluated for effectiveness.

Open Quote I have worked at this school for over 14 years. In the past 6 years we have really seen an increase in academic programs which offer college credit. Our IB Programme is competitive with IB around the globe. If IB Diploma Programme students reach the required composite score they can earn 36 college credits. We are also now offering the Pathways to Technology program. Through P-Tech students can earn and associates degree from PGCC at the same time they graduate from high school. The pathways we offer in P-Tech our Hospitality Services Management and Health Services Management. Our focus on character building and community service is very evident in our numerous community service projects throughout the year. Our leadership team is working hard to improve college and career readiness. The size of the school is ideal because it is big enough to offer a variety of extra curricular activities but not so big that students feel overwhelmed. The staff works very hard to provide lessons with a global focus. There are plenty of opportunities for success for our students both in and outside of the classroom with the support of our staff and parent involvement. Our athletic programs are also quite competitive. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter attended FDHS in her 9th grade year. I only have positive things to say.
She is a upcoming Senior. I' m grateful to be part of the great PTSA. The Admins, staff, and students are awesome. Our Principal Scott is coming up on his 3 year and he is very hands on with our kids and very visible in the classroom, hallways, and afterschool activities. FDHS has an outstanding curriculum classes. We are an IB World School. Close Quote
