Summary

South Lake Elementary is a public elementary school in Gaithersburg, Maryland, serving 780 students in grades PK-5. It is part of the Montgomery County Public Schools district, which is ranked 8th out of 25 districts in the state.

Despite being part of a highly-ranked district, South Lake Elementary has consistently underperformed compared to other Maryland elementary schools. The school has maintained a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger for most of the past decade, indicating it is performing significantly below average. South Lake's proficiency rates in Mathematics and English Language Arts are much lower than the county and state averages, with only 15.4% and 21% of students meeting proficiency standards, respectively, in the 2024-2025 school year. The school also struggles with high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 23.2% to 47.4% over the past few years.

Interestingly, the nearby schools such as Washington Grove Elementary, Summit Hall Elementary, and Harriet R. Tubman Elementary generally perform better than South Lake Elementary across various metrics, including academic proficiency and chronic absenteeism. This suggests that South Lake Elementary may need targeted interventions and support to improve student outcomes and bring it in line with its neighboring schools.

Open Quote The school ratings would make one nervous about this school...it did for me. But I have nothing but positive feedback about the school, faculty and staff. I felt compelled to right a positive review to share my experience. People usually only write reviews when they are mad about something...lol. The principal and vice principal are passionate and dedicated to their school, students and faculty. I'm also impressed with the staff and faculty. They are very friendly, organized and dedicated to helping each student. I'm happy to have my child attend this school! Close Quote
