Summary

Quarterfield Elementary is a public elementary school in Severn, Maryland, serving 431 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Anne Arundel County Public Schools district. While the school has some bright spots, it faces several challenges, including lower academic performance, high chronic absenteeism, and a relatively low-income student population.

Quarterfield Elementary's overall proficiency rates in MCAP Mathematics and English Language Arts are consistently lower than the Anne Arundel County and Maryland state averages across all grade levels. The school's performance is particularly weak in Mathematics, with proficiency rates ranging from 26.2% to 30.8% compared to higher county and state averages. However, Quarterfield's African American and Hispanic students perform better than the school's overall performance, suggesting the school may be facing challenges in supporting its White student population.

Quarterfield Elementary also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 20.6% to 34.0% over the past few years, which are significantly higher than the state and county averages. Additionally, the school has a high percentage of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a relatively low-income student population. While Quarterfield has a relatively high per-student spending of $18,632, this higher spending does not appear to be directly translating into improved academic outcomes, as the school's student-teacher ratio is similar to nearby schools with better performance.

Open Quote I love this school! My child attended Quarterfield for the past 3 years, going on 4. We looked at all school options for him and decided on Quarterfield because of the engaged staff. The principal, Mr. Buris, is very patient, creative, and accommodating with the students. He seems to know all the kids, pops in and out of classrooms to help, and the kids stop to chat with him all the time. The ladies in the front office are helpful and know all the students. Our teachers have been beyond fantastic. The students are traded among the teachers in different subject areas, but primarily math and reading, to match with peers at their learning rate. Each day revolves around a particular topic or concept to tie everything together. All of the teachers seem to be fun. The class room is set up to give kids breaks from sitting, class discussions are interactive, and there are activity centers for kids who completed classwork early. The kids are taught mulitple methods of problem solving and encouraged to use what is best for the child.

I wish the school had a separate gym from cafeteria to give more infoor recess space, and the gym needs an upgraded AC unit--fault of the county for continuously bumping the school down the list for upgrades. Close Quote

Open Quote I've been a Quarterfield parent for 2 years now, entering my 3rd year, with my second child entering kindergarten this year. I've had a great experience with the school. The teachers, at least the ones my daughter has had the fortune of having, have been great. They seem to truly care for the children, they have passionate and dynamic and energetic. I loved Mrs. Levery, she's been a great principle. Hopefully the new principle brings the same enthusiasm for the school as she did. The staff is great, very responsive. My daughter loves this school so far and I hope the little has the same experience. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter's second grade experience has been less than I desire this year. For the second half of the school year, she was left with a full time sub. The principal has done a great job with trying to provide the qualified sub, but it still does not replace a full-time invested teacher. The social climate seems to be nice. I'm hoping next year will be much better. Close Quote

Open Quote The principal puts on a good front in front of parents but she is less that desireable. She has stopped many of the activities that PTA use to do for the children and thier families. (family fun day, Doughnuts with Dad, Muffins with Mom) She has often been less than professional. My child has been bullied and the meeting has done nothing but intensify it! Close Quote
