Summary

Calvin High School in Calvin, LA, is a small alternative public school serving 289 students in grades PK through 12 within the Winn Parish district, where a majority of students (61.59%) qualify for free or reduced lunch.

This school stands out for its exceptional ability to keep students on track to graduate. Calvin High School boasts a remarkable 94.7% graduation rate and has maintained a 0.0% dropout rate for three consecutive years—a stark contrast to nearby Dodson High School, which has an 87.5% graduation rate and a 2.0% dropout rate. Academically, Calvin consistently outperforms its district in core subjects, with 58% of students proficient in Math and 74% in English Language Arts. It also shines on high-stakes End-of-Course exams, achieving 83% proficiency in U.S. History and 77% in Algebra I, far exceeding both district and state averages. While Saline High School in Bienville Parish is a top-tier performer with even higher scores, Calvin is a strong academic leader within its own district.

Despite these successes, Calvin faces two key challenges. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 26.8%, while significantly lower than the district average of 40.8% and Dodson’s 44.3%, has been trending upward and could threaten future outcomes. Additionally, Social Studies proficiency (46%) lags behind the state average (55%), suggesting a need for improvement in that subject. Overall, Calvin High School defies typical expectations for an alternative school, demonstrating that a supportive environment can lead to high graduation rates and strong academic performance.

Open Quote If you got kids that go to this school run . You have teachers that don’t care about kids in school. Plus the principal don’t care. Prime example my little girl is in the 7th grade and there is a little boy telling girls in his class what they can do to him sexually. Plus he’s exposed himself and the teachers said it’s the girls fault for him acting like that . Nothing was done even after going to the principal and the superintendent. On another note it’s sad black kids get attitude from teachers when asked for help . My kids and others tell me the same thing. Close Quote
