Summary

Hammond Westside Montessori is a large public elementary school in Hammond, LA, serving 1,022 students in grades PK-8 within the Tangipahoa Parish school district, where over 78% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. This school presents a fascinating paradox: while its overall test scores in core subjects like math and ELA for grades 3-8 consistently fall below state averages, its End-of-Course (EOC) English I program for advanced 8th graders is world-class, achieving 100% proficiency rates in recent years. This creates a "two-schools" dynamic where the standard curriculum struggles, but a specific advanced track delivers extraordinary results, suggesting resources and effective teaching may be highly concentrated in upper-grade, advanced courses.

When compared to nearby schools, the contrasts are striking. Just 2.47 miles away, Southeastern LA University Lab School is a top performer with 88% math proficiency and only 2.3% chronic absenteeism, highlighting how socioeconomic factors strongly correlate with academic outcomes. Within the same district, D.C. Reeves Elementary School achieves better results with a similar poverty rate (72.5%), making it a valuable peer for Hammond Westside to study. Meanwhile, schools in the higher-performing Livingston Parish district, like Albany Upper Elementary School, achieve proficiency rates 20-30 percentage points higher despite similar poverty levels, underscoring the impact of district-level resources and culture.

The school faces significant challenges, including a chronic absenteeism rate of 30.6% (higher than the state average of 22.5%) and critically low performance for Special Education students, who ranked in the 6th percentile statewide. However, there are bright spots: English Language Learner students have shown remarkable improvement, jumping from the 10th to the 54th percentile, and the school has invested heavily in reducing its student-teacher ratio to 11.2, one of the lowest in the area. To improve, Hammond Westside must replicate the success of its English I program across the broader curriculum and learn from schools like D.C. Reeves that achieve better outcomes with similar demographics.
