Summary

Florida Avenue Elementary School in Slidell, LA, serves 440 students from Pre-Kindergarten through 6th grade and is part of the highly-rated St. Tammany Parish school district, though the school itself has faced significant challenges in recent years.

The most critical issue at Florida Avenue is a very high rate of chronic absenteeism, which reached 27.4% in the 2024-2025 school year. This is much higher than the district average of 21.2% and nearly double the rate at nearby high-performing schools like Honey Island Elementary (13.7%) and Bonne Ecole Elementary (19.9%). This attendance problem has been persistent for years and directly impacts learning. Academically, the school lags behind its peers, with only 46% of students proficient in Math compared to 71% district-wide, and 43% in Social Studies versus 66% district-wide. In contrast, nearby Whispering Forest Elementary achieved 75% Math proficiency and 74% Social Studies proficiency. However, it is important to note that schools serving a similar demographic profile, such as Glynn H. Brock Elementary, face comparable struggles, suggesting these challenges are shared across the area.

Despite these difficulties, there are some positive aspects. Florida Avenue has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 10.3:1, which is lower than many nearby schools and suggests smaller class sizes. Additionally, the school shows a relative strength in English Language Arts (ELA), with 64% of students proficient, and 4th-grade ELA proficiency reaching 77%, nearly matching the district average. This indicates that literacy instruction may be a foundation to build upon. For parents, the key takeaway is that while the school has potential assets like small class sizes and a strength in reading, its success will likely depend on aggressive, community-based efforts to improve attendance and address the underlying causes of chronic absenteeism.

Open Quote Teachers lacked the skills needed to address the learning needs of the children. My son's teacher simply sent home workbooks for me to teach, after a full day of school and my full time job. I found myself also doing the teachers most basic job. Close Quote
