Summary

Carencro High School is a large public high school in Lafayette, LA, serving 1,116 students in grades 9-12 within the Lafayette Parish school district, a relatively high-performing district ranked 27th out of 116 in Louisiana.

Carencro High School is currently facing significant challenges, most notably a severe chronic absenteeism crisis. In the 2024-2025 school year, 40.3% of students were chronically absent—nearly double the district average of 24.0% and the state average of 22.5%. This rate is much higher than nearby schools like Lafayette High School (22.1%) and even Acadiana High School (35.3%). This absenteeism problem is directly linked to low academic performance, with only 41% of students proficient in Algebra I compared to 71% in the district. The graduation rate has also declined to 81.2%, below the district average of 85.1%, while the dropout rate of 5.1% is nearly double the district average and the highest among standard Lafayette Parish high schools.

While the school has historically shown some relative strength in serving its African American students, its overall effectiveness for nearly all student subgroups has dropped to its lowest point in recent years. This includes a dramatic decline for English Language Learners, who fell from the 68th percentile to the 2nd percentile. The school's 1-star rating for the 2025-2026 school year places it 251st out of 325 Louisiana high schools, making it the weakest performer among the standard comprehensive high schools in the district. Only Northside High School (with a 62.1% chronic absenteeism rate) performs worse, suggesting that Carencro's most critical challenge is getting students back into the classroom.
