Summary

Marie B. Riviere Elementary School is a public school in Metairie, LA, serving 526 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Jefferson Parish school district, and it is a school on a clear upward trajectory.

This school stands out for its exceptional support of English Language Learner (ELL) students, ranking in the 90th percentile or higher statewide for three consecutive years—a true 5-star performance. Academically, Riviere shines brightest in mathematics, where 75% of all students were proficient in 2025-2026, significantly outpacing both the district (54%) and state (62%). This strength is especially notable in 4th and 5th grades, where math proficiency reaches 82% and 88%, respectively. The school has also made impressive strides in reducing chronic absenteeism, dropping from 20.6% to just 13.6%, which is far better than the district and state averages. Furthermore, the student-teacher ratio has been dramatically lowered to 9.7:1, the lowest among nearby schools, allowing for more individualized attention. Compared to its neighbor, J.C. Ellis School, Riviere offers stronger math performance (75% vs. 69%), while J.C. Ellis leads in English Language Arts (75% vs. 64%). When compared to the high-performing magnet Metairie Academy for Advanced Studies, Riviere’s achievements are particularly impressive given it serves a broader, non-selective student population.

While the school excels overall, a key area for growth is the "3rd-grade slump." In 2025-2026, 3rd-grade proficiency rates were notably lower than the school's averages, especially in English Language Arts (45%), which fell below both the district (52%) and state (64%) averages. This suggests a critical transition point where students may need extra support. Additionally, while the school is a state leader for ELL students, its performance for White students has historically been a weakness, indicating that instructional strategies may not be equally effective for all groups. Overall, Riviere Elementary is a strong, balanced traditional public school that is clearly improving and offers a standout math program and exceptional support for English learners.

Open Quote I love my son's school. Marie Riviere is so awesome. Everyday at Carpool ( which moves fast) the PRINCIPAL and teachers are happy and smiling and playing music and welcoming the kids. I am happy after dropping off Jonathan even if it's been a bad morning.

Not to mention the great teachers ability to work with the kids, ADHD and all, no yelling, no disrespect to anyone. The office staff actually cares about your kids instead of making you feel unwelcome. I cannot say enough good things about the school. Their summer camp program is awesome too. Ms. Gene loves the kids and ALWAYS has something fun for them to do if they are not outside playing.

You can have the teachers e-mail and they actually e-mail you back. They keep in touch as much as you want. They communicate and will discuss ideas and ways to help your child success. They are so kind and loving. After coming from another public school close by this is such a breath of fresh air. As a parent you are listened to and welcomed and always communicated with. That is hard to find. Weekly newsletters, almost daily something comes home about what is going on. There is fair amount of homework and they keep close tabs on conduct and send home weekly communications / conduct on each child. There is a fair, a 5K walk and all kinds of ways to involve families and kids in the school and community.

It's free and I'd pay for it. Love my school. Only wish it went to 8th grade. Close Quote
