Summary

Baton Rouge Center for Visual and Performing Arts (BRCVPA) is a public elementary magnet school in Baton Rouge, LA, serving 594 students in grades PK-5 within the East Baton Rouge Parish school district, and it has a long history of academic excellence, consistently ranking in the top 10% of elementary schools in Louisiana for the past decade.

BRCVPA stands out for its exceptional performance across all student groups, ranking in the 97th percentile statewide for both African American students and those from low socio-economic backgrounds, proving that demographic factors do not determine academic outcomes. The school also boasts a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of just 3.5%, dramatically lower than the district average of 30.5% and the state average of 22.5%. This is a stark contrast to nearby schools like Magnolia Woods Elementary School, located just 0.6 miles away, which has a chronic absenteeism rate of 23.9% and ranks in the 38th percentile statewide. BRCVPA also excels in Social Studies with 83% proficiency, a full 28 points above the state average, while many nearby schools struggle in this subject.

While BRCVPA has been a 5-star institution for a decade, its state ranking has slipped from a peak of 15th to 61st, indicating increased competition from other specialized programs like Mayfair Laboratory School, which has surged to 1st place. Interestingly, BRCVPA achieves top-tier results with a student-teacher ratio of 15.3:1, which is higher than many of its high-performing peers, suggesting its success is driven more by its specialized curriculum and strong school culture than by class size. A potential area of focus is a consistent pattern of lower proficiency in 5th grade compared to 3rd and 4th grades, which may be worth investigating further.

Open Quote My children have attended BRCVPA since 2008. We love this school! The staff is excellent and their enthusiasm is reflected in the students outstanding academic performance. This school also has tremendous support from the parents; our PTO provides great things for the school. The visual and performing arts programs allow the students to express their creativity through a variety of methods. I know the EBRPSS gets a bad rap, but this school is an exception. I feel fortunate that my kids are getting such a fantastic educational experience from this school! Close Quote
