Summary

Atkins Technology Elementary School is a small elementary school in Shreveport, LA, serving 189 students in grades PK-5 as part of the Caddo Parish school district, where over 92% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. The school has shown a significant and encouraging upward trend in recent years, moving from the 0th percentile in statewide rankings to the 11th percentile in the most recent data, which is a substantial improvement compared to nearby schools like Southern Hills Elementary School, which dropped from the 17th to the 5th percentile over the same period.

One of the most striking features of Atkins is its very low student-teacher ratio of 9.7:1, which is much lower than nearby high-performing magnet schools like South Highlands Elementary Magnet School (around 15:1) and other schools with similar demographics. This suggests the potential for more individualized attention, but the school faces a critical challenge: a rapidly worsening chronic absenteeism crisis. In the 2024-2025 school year, 49.1% of students were chronically absent, which is the highest rate among comparable elementary schools in the area and more than double the state average of 22.5%. This rate has nearly doubled from 25.9% in 2021-2022, and it stands in stark contrast to schools like Eden Gardens Fundamental Elementary School and Fairfield Magnet School, which have chronic absenteeism rates below 5%.

Despite the attendance crisis, the students who do attend are making significant academic gains. English Language Arts proficiency rose from 25% in 2023-2024 to 48% in 2025-2026, and Mathematics from 31% to 40%. The school also shows a relative strength in serving its African American students, ranking in the 32nd percentile for this subgroup in 2024-2025, which is higher than its overall rank. This suggests that the school's instructional strategies may be effective, but their impact is being severely limited by the attendance problem. If the school can address absenteeism, its academic performance could see a dramatic leap, potentially closing the gap with the top-tier magnet schools located just blocks away.

Open Quote Atkins is a very good school. This school has some of the most caring and hard working teachers and staff members in Shreveport. Despite the area that they are located in and what others may think about them they are GREAT! I love this school and the people that are employed there. To those that are helping keep the school going: Mrs. Gladney, Mrs. Everett, Ms. Banks, Mr. French, Ms. Newton, Mrs. Jackson and Ms. Byrd.........I love you all to death and I thank each of you for taking the time out to make sure that our little ones get what they need. I look forward to seeing all of you in the coming school year! Close Quote
