Summary

Ross Elementary School in Crowley, LA, serves 256 students in 1st through 5th grade and is part of the Acadia Parish school district, a 4-star district ranking in the 75th percentile statewide. However, the school itself is facing significant challenges, with over 92% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch and a state ranking that has dropped from the 55th percentile in 2017-2018 to the 8th percentile for the 2025-2026 school year, its lowest point in recent data.

Academic proficiency at Ross is critically low compared to nearby schools. In mathematics, only 32% of students are proficient, roughly half the district average of 64% and far below high-performing peers like Egan Elementary School (91%) and Morse Elementary School (73%). Social studies proficiency is similarly low at 27%, compared to the district average of 53%. English language arts is the strongest subject at 49%, but still lags behind the district average of 70%. Chronic absenteeism is a major concern, with 32.9% of students chronically absent—more than double the rate at Morse (17.4%) and six times higher than Egan (5.5%). This pattern of high absenteeism and low performance is shared by other Crowley schools like North Crowley Elementary School and South Crowley Elementary School, suggesting a systemic issue tied to the urban environment.

Despite these challenges, there is a bright spot: 4th-grade English language arts proficiency reached 56% in the 2025-2026 school year, the school's highest score in any subject or grade. This suggests a potential foundation for improvement. However, the school's rapid decline—from a 2-star rating in 2022-2023 to a 0-star rating in 2025-2026—highlights an urgent need for intervention, particularly in mathematics and social studies, and a focus on addressing the root causes of chronic absenteeism.

Open Quote Nearly 100% of it's students come from the lower socioeconomic neighborhoods surrounding the school. Some would think because of this there would behavior problems running rampant. But it's the opposite. These kids are excited about school. It's amazing to see that in such young children coming from rough homes. I think it's partly due to their new principal. She has just as much vigor as these students. I see nothing but great things in the future for this school. Keep it up! Close Quote
