Grades
Summary

Garfield Elementary School is a public elementary school in Elgin, Illinois, serving 321 students in grades PK-6. The school has a predominantly Hispanic student population, with 84.42% of students identifying as Hispanic in the 2022-2023 school year.

Garfield Elementary faces significant challenges, including consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, low academic performance on state assessments, and wide disparities in student group performance. The school's chronic absenteeism rate ranged from 31.1% to 47.4% in recent years, significantly higher than the 30.4% to 44.1% range at nearby schools. In 2022-2023, only 10.2% of 3rd-grade students at Garfield were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 17.4% in the School District U-46 and 28.8% statewide. While Garfield's English Language Learner students rank relatively high, its Special Education students rank very low compared to other schools in the state.

Despite Garfield Elementary's relatively high per-student spending of $15,211 in 2022-2023, the school's academic performance remains low. This raises questions about the effectiveness of the school's resource allocation and the need to ensure that funding is being used in the most impactful way. Interestingly, Clinton Elementary, which is just 2.17 miles away, has significantly higher test scores and a lower chronic absenteeism rate, despite serving a more diverse student population. Understanding the factors that contribute to these differences could provide valuable insights for Garfield Elementary.

Open Quote Excellent staff. The culture of the school is fantastic. Sadly, the school has low ratings due to racist parents who rate the school poorly because they want their kids to go to all white schools. But the kids are doing fantastic. The reason they may test low is because most of the children are in the bilingual program and are taking standardized testing for English speaking children which isn’t fair nor does it reflect the actual place where students are academically.
