Summary

Otis Elementary School is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 365 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 698 out of 811 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger. Otis Elementary School has consistently been ranked in the bottom 25% of Illinois elementary schools over the past 10 years, with a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Otis Elementary School significantly underperforms compared to the district and state in both English Language Arts and Mathematics proficiency across all grade levels. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 22.4% of Otis students were proficient or better in ELA, compared to 42.8% for the district and 53.1% for the state. In Mathematics, only 9.2% of Otis students were proficient or better, compared to 27.3% for the district and 38.5% for the state. The school also has consistently high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 44.0% over the past few years, significantly higher than the district and state averages.

Interestingly, the nearby Rudolph Elementary Learning Center, Brown W Elementary School, and Suder Montessori Elementary Magnet School generally outperform Otis Elementary School in academic achievement, with higher proficiency rates in both ELA and Mathematics, as well as lower chronic absenteeism rates. This suggests that there may be underlying issues related to student engagement, school climate, and the ability to effectively support the diverse needs of the student population at Otis Elementary School, despite its relatively high spending per student.

Open Quote This use to be a great school until Mrs. Mendez took over. Our school was at a level 1. I pulled my daughter out of this school and sent her to another level 1 school. She had to catch up because she was so behind. I did appreciate the teachers that tried to make a difference. Also, some of the staff made my daughter to be a bully, but she was the one that got bullied. My daughter is a big girl that didn't cry so they targeted her. At her new school, all the staff loves her especially the principal and she has many friends. Close Quote
