Summary

Newberry Elementary Math & Science Academy is a public elementary school serving grades PK-8 in Chicago, Illinois, with 327 students. The school is part of the Chicago Public Schools District 299, which is ranked 698 out of 811 districts in Illinois and has a 1-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Newberry Elementary consistently underperforms compared to the district and state in both English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics proficiency. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 39.2% of Newberry students were proficient in ELA, compared to 42.8% for the district and 53.1% for the state. In Math, the proficiency rate was just 21.8%, compared to 27.3% for the district and 38.5% for the state. The school's performance also varies significantly across different student subgroups, with African American students performing relatively well, but Hispanic students and students with special needs struggling. Additionally, Newberry Elementary has very high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 25.4% to 48.1% over the past few years.

The data shows a stark contrast between Newberry Elementary and several nearby high-performing schools, such as Skinner North Elementary, Lincoln Elementary, and Alcott Elementary, which consistently rank in the top 5-10% of Illinois elementary schools and significantly outperform Newberry in both ELA and Math proficiency. Despite spending significantly more per student than the district average, Newberry Elementary's academic outcomes remain poor, raising questions about the effectiveness of the school's resource allocation and the need to re-evaluate its spending priorities.

Open Quote This is a great school. My son has been a student here for 4 years and we love it. There are some things that could be better- like, homework is still a thing here, despite all the best evidence that indicates that most homework is not useful. The parent group here is quite strong- involved a lot with fund raising and other aspects (such as appearing the appearance with art and beautification projects). Great location. Close Quote

Open Quote My son goes to Newberry. We are very happy with the teachers and the concentration on math and science. The Principal and Asst. Principal are very involved and really care about the children. Close Quote
