Academically, Stone Mountain High School consistently underperforms compared to the DeKalb County and Georgia state averages on the Milestones Assessments. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, only 16.9% of students were proficient or better in American Literature and Composition, compared to 32.9% in DeKalb County and 40.4% statewide. The school's four-year graduation rates, ranging from 75.8% to 85.4% in recent years, are also below the state average. Additionally, Stone Mountain High School has an extremely high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, indicating a high level of economic disadvantage among the student population.

When comparing Stone Mountain High School to nearby schools, the contrast is stark. Stephenson High School and Lakeside High School have significantly higher proficiency rates and graduation rates. The nearby Dekalb Early College Academy stands out as a high-performing outlier, with proficiency rates well above the state and county averages. This suggests that while there are pockets of excellence within the DeKalb County School District, Stone Mountain High School is not one of them. Addressing the challenges faced by Stone Mountain High School will require a multi-faceted approach, including targeted interventions, resource allocation, and collaboration with the broader community.

Open Quote When I graduated from SMHS it was a top performing school like many of the Dekalb county schools. It sounds more like a correctional institution now. Close Quote

Open Quote Feels like the worst school ever. They make you not wear book bags for all of the last week of each semester, as well as a period for April fools and prior to thanksgiving. Also, during this, they make you eat inside the classroom. Oh and by the way, the school has been on lockdown at least 3 times already. And no, was not an emergency. Terrible, don't ruin your school record here. Close Quote
