Summary

Powder Springs Elementary School is a public elementary school serving 817 students in grades PK-5 in Powder Springs, Georgia, which is part of the Cobb County School District. While the district is ranked 54th out of 206 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating, Powder Springs Elementary has consistently underperformed, ranking in the bottom half of Georgia elementary schools over the past 10 years.

The school's academic performance on the Georgia Milestones assessments is significantly below the Cobb County and state averages across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 31.3% of 3rd graders were proficient in ELA, compared to 43.2% in Cobb County and 34.9% statewide. Math and science proficiency rates are also lagging behind the district and state. The school's high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, ranging from 69.38% to 78.34%, likely contributes to these academic challenges.

While Powder Springs Elementary's per-student spending is on the lower end compared to nearby schools, the decrease in student-teacher ratio suggests that the district may be directing more resources towards the school. However, the academic performance still lags, indicating that simply increasing resources may not be enough to drive significant improvement. Nearby Austell Elementary and Dowell Elementary, which serve similar student populations, perform significantly better on the Georgia Milestones assessments, providing potential insights for Powder Springs Elementary to improve its outcomes.

Open Quote I currently have two children attending this school. I will have to agree with parents that have shared their feelings about this school. The 4th-grade teachers here at this school are uncaring, burnt out. Children are different nowadays then there were 5 years ago. You can't continue to teach the same way. Your practicing insanity! I will be changing schools. Parents make sure you know who the teachers are in your children's classrooms! Close Quote

Open Quote My child slipped through the cracks at this school. It is unacceptable for students to be performing well below their grade and not receive the help they need. Needless to say, we could not have gotten out of there any sooner. Beware!! Close Quote

Open Quote I have a child that will be entering 2nd grade this year and a child entering kindergarten. My oldest has had nothing but good experiences at this school. The teachers have been amazing and have challenged my oldest. The staff are friendly and helpful. The reason for the 4 stars and not 5 is during last year it seemed that every other week my child was coming home telling me that they had watched a movie in one of their "specials" classes. I may be crazy, but I believe children should only be watching educational movies in school, not a Disney movie. I'm ok with a fun movie maybe once a month on the last Friday of the month, but not every week! Also, the security of getting into the school is a little lacking. I saw several parents get buzzed in, and walk right on by the front office without being stopped and asked to sign in as a visitor. They need to up security. Close Quote

Open Quote I remember going to this school when I was younger. And now I'm 14 and getting ready for 8th grade. But I remember having chicken biscuits that I bought from school, so we could raise money for the 5th grade year trip. I'll never forget the trip to Washington DC for 5th grade. But we also sold chicken biscuits yearly and also fund-raise for Relay for Life. And its just a too many words to describe my best experience. And going to the world of coke in 4th grade. Going to the performing arts. When that one day when I came back from my shower in the morning getting ready for school. My mom showed me the headline about Powder Springs Elementary, which was absolutely UNTRUE!!!! THE AJC IS JUST A FILTHY LIE!! NOTHING IN THAT HEADLINE MADE SENSE!!! When I told my mom to take me there to Powder Springs Elementary, she took me and luckily my former teachers were still there. I talked to them and showed them and obviously they saw it and so did the principal. So Ms.Mitchell said on the morning announcements about how we are going to do t.e.a.m, Don't ask! So the next day I went I saw that there were AJC people with clipboards around the whole school. Some of them were really nice. Some of them didn't talk at all. So you need to listen to the students who went through the experience of PSE because it is just fun you see at this school. Do you know the definition of PSE? And the

Open Quote I withdraw my child from Powder Springs elementary. Second graders can't read. Teachers don't care. Parents absolutely not welcome. The final point was when the principal said: "Nothing special about your child" instead of trying to challenge my child. Close Quote
