Summary

Oak Hammock K-8 School in Port St. Lucie, FL, is a large public school serving 1,727 students from Pre-K through 8th grade within the St. Lucie district, where it serves a predominantly low-income community with 66% of students eligible for free or reduced-price lunch.

This school presents a fascinating "two-tiered" academic profile. On one hand, it achieves exceptional results in advanced high school courses: students taking Algebra 1 and Geometry End-of-Course exams consistently outperform district and state averages by wide margins, with Geometry achieving a perfect 100% proficiency rate for three consecutive years. On the other hand, most grade-level FAST assessments in English Language Arts and Math fall below district and state averages. The most glaring issue is a persistent "7th-grade math cliff"—proficiency has been stuck at just 13-14% for four years, far below the district's 40% and state's 53%. This contrasts sharply with nearby Palm Pointe K8 School, a 4-star school that outperforms Oak Hammock in virtually every grade-level subject by 20-30 percentage points, despite similar spending and demographics.

Despite these challenges, there are bright spots. Chronic absenteeism has improved significantly, dropping from 34.5% to 26.8%, now better than both district and state averages. The school also shows pockets of strength in 5th and 8th-grade math, where proficiency exceeds state averages. Oak Hammock spends less per student ($9,894) than nearby schools like Northport K-8 School ($13,012), suggesting that targeted investments in curriculum and instruction—particularly for 7th-grade math—could help replicate the success seen in advanced courses across all grade levels.

Open Quote This school is a JOKE! The teachers are there to collect a paycheck and see fit to tease children, like mine, with learning disabilities. If you think the Dean might help, hope you do not have failed football coach Dean (initials CH). He is RUDE and CONDESCENDING. He has no business in the education system, though most at the school don't. As a parent I could not be more disappointed with a school. I am only rating one star as a negative rating is not possible. Close Quote
