Summary

Chiles Middle School in Oviedo, FL, is a high-performing public school serving 1,279 students in grades 6-8 within the top-ranked Seminole County Public School District. This school consistently ranks in the top 15% of Florida middle schools, earning a 4-star rating from Schooldigger for the past five years. With a relatively low rate of economic disadvantage (only 25.65% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch) and a remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 18.7%, Chiles fosters a highly engaged student body and a strong culture of attendance.

Chiles stands out for its exceptional academic performance, particularly in advanced coursework. The school achieves perfect or near-perfect proficiency rates on End-of-Course (EOC) exams, including a stunning 100% in Geometry and 92% in Algebra 1—the highest Algebra 1 score among all Seminole County middle schools. Its Civics proficiency rate of 90% is also the best among nearby schools. While Chiles excels in these areas, it shares a common pattern with other schools where 8th-grade math scores dip compared to 6th and 7th grades, though this drop is more pronounced here. Interestingly, Chiles achieves these top-tier results while spending the least per student ($8,180) among all nearby schools, making it a model of cost-effective, high-quality education.

When compared to its neighbors, Chiles clearly benefits from what might be called the "Oviedo advantage." Along with Jackson Heights Middle School, it is a top performer in the region, far outpacing schools like Tuskawilla Middle School (also in Oviedo but with higher economic disadvantage and lower scores) and Union Park Middle in Orange County. Only Avalon Middle in Orange County rivals Chiles' performance, highlighting how socioeconomic factors often correlate with school outcomes. After a pandemic-era dip, Chiles has shown a strong upward trend in its state ranking, moving from the 77th to the 87th percentile, demonstrating its continued commitment to excellence.

Open Quote Not very impressed with this school now that my daughter is finishing her 1st year there. Simple discipline is out the window. My daughter is straight A's and very attentive in classes, however, if you don't luck out and get your child placed in the Gifted/Advanced, the 'regular' are full of D and C students who don't want to be there and learn. Horrible communication between the guidance and parents. Close Quote
