Summary

Tuskawilla Middle School in Oviedo, FL, serves 1,060 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the highly-ranked Seminole County Public Schools district, which ranks in the top 15% of Florida districts.

Tuskawilla stands out for its exceptional advanced math program, with 88% of students proficient in Algebra 1 and 92% in Geometry End-of-Course exams—dramatically higher than district and state averages. This is a consistent strength over the past four years. However, the school occupies a middle ground among its Seminole County peers. It is outperformed by top-tier schools like Chiles Middle School (87th percentile) and Jackson Heights Middle School (84th percentile), but generally outperforms nearby schools like Milwee Middle School (55th percentile) and Indian Trails Middle School (68th percentile). Notably, Tuskawilla has a higher rate of economic disadvantage (nearly 50% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch) compared to its top-performing neighbors, and its chronic absenteeism rate of 29.4% is significantly higher than Chiles (18.7%) and Jackson Heights (16.5%).

An interesting pattern across Tuskawilla and nearly all nearby schools is a sharp drop in 8th-grade math proficiency, likely because advanced students take Algebra 1 or Geometry exams instead of the standard test. The data also reveals that higher spending doesn't guarantee better results—South Seminole Middle School has the highest per-student spending but the lowest state ranking among Seminole County schools. Overall, Tuskawilla is a stable, consistent performer that has maintained its state ranking between the 53rd and 67th percentile for the past decade, making it a reliable option within the district.

Open Quote Administration at this school is terrible. Principal is rude and disrespectful to parents and students. Does not act in the best interest of the students. Will not even consider working with a parent on a concern. Principal passes judgement, mocks and rolls his eyes. This is not the 1960s. He should retire and let someone with a fresh attitude and skills of how to work with students today take his place. Close Quote
