Open Quote 1) The intermediate (last year) changed their grading policy which is outrageous and unfair. For example at the Intermediate School the Major Grade (test) is 66% of the grade and Intermediate Grade (Quiz) is 34% of the grade, and there is no other grade for home works, classwork, etc. In my opinion this grading system is setting a child up for failure because if a child does not do well on a test it lowers their average grade significantly. I assume the Intermediate School is trying to mirror the Middle School, but the truth is that they are not. If the Intermediate school took the time to look at the Middle School's grading system they would see that the percentage scale for grades are tailored to help and not hinder the student. In the Middle School home works, projects and classwork counts towards a grade, so they actually give the student opportunities for the student to do well. In addition, the percentage grade scale at the Middle School are lower in each category. For example, the Major grade (test)45%, Intermediate Grade (quiz) 30%, and Minor Grade (homework, classwork, or projects)is 25%. Those percentages are not so high and are evenly spread out, so if a child does not do well on a test grade it will not cripple the child's overall average.

2) I have two boys who have attended Holley Navarre Intermediate and this school in the last two years has gotten worst. Since the common core has been in place the teachers are teaching differently the curriculum. There is no consistency. I have spoken with other parents and I have noticed that some teachers use the Reading textbook to give exams and others use only a few stories from the textbook and other stories from printout reading (cold reads), so if a student was switch from one teacher to another that student could get confused, or behind on his reading, or simply not inline with the other students. In addition, if a teacher does not use the textbook curriculum on exams then the parent will not be able to use the school's textbook as a resource to assist a child who is having difficulties, or to help them to study before an exam. In the Middle School all the exams in class are tailored to address information in the textbook. Close Quote
