Summary

Martin Luther King Middle School is a public middle school located in Milton, Florida, serving grades 6-8 with a total enrollment of 681 students. The school is part of the Santa Rosa school district, which is ranked 20th out of 67 districts in Florida and has a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger.

Martin Luther King Middle School consistently underperforms compared to the Santa Rosa district and the state of Florida in most academic subjects. For example, in the 2024-2025 school year, the school had only 53% of 6th graders proficient in English Language Arts, compared to 68% in the district and 60% statewide. Similarly, in 8th grade math, the school had 59% proficiency, while the district and state had 73% and 57%, respectively. The school also has significantly higher chronic absenteeism rates, with 31.4% of students chronically absent in the 2023-2024 school year, compared to 31.4% for the other nearby schools.

The school's high percentage of students receiving free or reduced-price lunch, at 69.75% in the 2023-2024 school year, indicates that the student population faces significant socioeconomic challenges. Despite the higher per-student spending at Martin Luther King Middle School, at $9,301 in the 2023-2024 school year, the academic performance remains lower than the surrounding schools, which range from $6,971 to $8,552 per student. This raises questions about the effective allocation of resources and the need to ensure that increased spending is directly linked to improved student outcomes.

Open Quote King is a great school! I would not hesitate to put my children in that school. The behavior of students is outstanding. You won't find fights and horrible behavior there like you will at other schools. The teachers are awesome and pour their heart into teaching the children. You can tell they really care about their students. The administration is caring and involved. King may not have the state standardized scores that the schools in the most affluent neighborhoods have, (which is true anywhere), but their scores aren't low and students make a LOT of progress each year. In years past, King had a behavior problem, but they also were very overcrowded. It has really changed, especially in the past 7 or 8 years. Close Quote
