Summary

Azalea Middle School in St. Petersburg, FL, serves 696 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Pinellas County school district, but it has consistently ranked in the bottom 20-30% of Florida middle schools for the past decade, earning a 1-star rating for eight consecutive years. The school serves a high-needs population, with 63.2% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch in the 2024-2025 school year.

The most alarming metric is the catastrophic performance in 7th-grade math, where only 5% of students were proficient on the 2025-2026 FAST exam, compared to the state average of 53%. This is a stark contrast to nearby Tyrone Middle School, just 1.18 miles away, which serves a similar demographic but ranks in the 51st percentile and outperforms Azalea in every subject. Azalea also faces a severe chronic absenteeism crisis, with 44.9% of students chronically absent in 2023-2024, nearly 50% higher than the district average and far worse than high-performing Thurgood Marshall Fundamental (19.0%).

Despite these challenges, there is a notable paradox: students taking Algebra 1 End-of-Course exams perform exceptionally well, with 88% proficient in 2025-2026, far exceeding district and state averages. This suggests a small, high-achieving cohort is effectively accelerated, but the general student body struggles. Additionally, 8th-grade scores show a glimmer of improvement, with 46% proficient in math and 49% in ELA, the highest of any grade level at the school. Per-student spending at Azalea ($10,803) is in the middle of the pack compared to peers, indicating that funding is not the primary issue. The proximity and demographic similarity to Tyrone Middle School highlight that significant improvement is possible within the same community, making Azalea’s persistent underperformance a clear call for urgent intervention focused on attendance and foundational math skills.

Open Quote If you have not been to Azalea Middle School lately...then you don't know Azalea Middle School. This school improved it's grade, has an amazing engineering program, aviation program, and a brand new Civil Air Patrol Squadron, just to name a few of the amazing upgrades and changes that this school has undergone. The principal that brought the school grade up will be entering her 3rd year with the school in 23/24 and continues to make plans for a bright future at Azalea. Things are great, and consistently looking up. Close Quote

Open Quote This school is getting better and better each year. I am so happy I enrolled my student in this school. Where else can they learn how to fly real airplanes, drones, and even join the Civil Air Patrol (in sponsor with United State Air Force) as a class. AMAZING! Close Quote

Open Quote Great so far for my daughter prior Covid homeschooling. The homeschooling was ridiculous to get them logged on to each class. I'm worried they'll fail bc they could not connect to their classes. Before Covid... Great school!!!!!!! Close Quote

Open Quote Azalea Middle School carries the history of many years of bad history. Today, the staff of Azalea is moving in the right direction. The staff is caring, resourceful, and dedicated to their students and community. The growing magnet programs are creating learning and career opportunities offered no where else. This is the new Azalea Middle School. Go Black Knights! Close Quote

Open Quote We chose Azalea Middle first out of all other options in St. Petersburg, an even with a one hour bus commute, it's been an excellent decision. The principal is responsive and no-nonsense yet loving. The teachers have all chosen to be there and are excited. Our 6th grader has not seen or experienced anything like we may have expected from an "F" rated school. He loves it and is thriving. The advantage of its low rating is the additional resources such as the bus that will take kids home once after school programs are over. Close Quote
