Summary

Centennial Middle School in Dade City, FL, serves 688 students in grades 6-8 and is part of the Pasco County School District, a mid-sized school where about half of the students come from economically disadvantaged backgrounds.

Academically, Centennial is a low-performing school with a 1-star rating, ranking in the 22nd percentile statewide. This is significantly lower than nearby schools like Dr. John Long Middle School (4-star, 80th percentile) and Pine View Middle School (3-star, 53rd percentile). However, there are bright spots. Students taking Algebra 1 consistently excel, with 81% proficiency in 2025-2026, far above the district and state averages. Civics has also seen dramatic improvement, rising from 43% to 79% proficiency over three years, now exceeding the state average. English Language Arts (ELA) shows steady year-over-year growth across all grades, with 6th-grade proficiency climbing from 28% to 49% in the same period. The school spends $11,087 per student, the highest among comparable Pasco middle schools, yet this investment hasn't yet translated into top-tier results.

Key challenges include a high chronic absenteeism rate of 29.8%, which is nearly double that of higher-performing peers like Dr. John Long (16.0%) and Pine View (13.1%). Math is a particular struggle, especially in 7th grade, where only 15% of students were proficient in 2025-2026—a 38-point gap below the state average. In contrast, 8th-grade math proficiency (59%) is much closer to the state average (61%). Compared to its closest peer, Pasco Middle School (just 3.92 miles away with similar demographics), Centennial outperforms in nearly every subject area, suggesting its programs and staff may be slightly more effective despite shared challenges.

Open Quote Our experience at this school has been a huge disappointment. The town ranted and raved about this school and we requested special placement so our children could attend and it ended up being a huge mistake. Their teaching method, or lack thereof for some teachers, is ridiculous. They don't formally teach the children, they assign work packets and give the children a deadline to complete and don't allow ample time in the week to accurately finish. Children can't raise their hand if they have a question, they're supposed to write their name on the board and the teacher helps them when they can. So if your child needs guidance on a question in their packet and the teacher doesn't get to their name, the child doesn't know how to complete the work, which they're then penalized for by receiving an F or zero. Their grades are monitored via online and the teachers have to update the child's profile by entering their earned grade, which half the teachers don't regularly do. So if your child completes a project or packet and submits it but the teacher doesn't enter the final grade then your child's online grade is zero. We have to constantly send emails requesting the grades be updated so we can see our child's current grade and accurate progress. Not to mention one teacher in particular loses the submitted homework and tries to blame the child, accusing they didn't complete. We proved on one instance that our child indeed submitted the work and miraculously their grade was updated the next day, after the teacher swore our child didn't complete it. I've heard tale a certain teacher even struck a child, although that teacher no longer works there, it wasn't due to being fired, they merely transferred to another school within the county. Our child was assaulted by another student so our child defended themselves, rightfully so, and it ended up being our child who was reprimanded by the principal nothing was done to the aggressor. We of course didn't scold our child for defending themselves but it's hard to preach kindness and good citizenship to your children when they see bullies being allowed to be bullies. We've always been an A student family but since attending Centennial our child has struggled needlessly and aggressively just to maintain. The faculty calls their new teaching method a tool to teach the children independence but we say it's setting them up for failure. Our job is teach independence, the schools job is to academically teach, which our children are doing for themselves. Beware Close Quote
