Summary

Raymond B. Stewart Middle School in Zephyrhills, FL, is a public school serving 954 students in grades 6-8 within the Pasco County School District, and it currently holds a 1-star rating, ranking in the 17th percentile of Florida middle schools for the 2025-2026 school year.

The most significant challenge facing Stewart Middle is a chronic absenteeism crisis, with 39.2% of students chronically absent in the 2023-2024 school year—nearly three times higher than nearby high-performing schools like Pine View Middle School (13.1%) and Dr. John Long Middle School (16.0%). This absenteeism rate is more comparable to struggling schools in the neighboring Polk County district, such as Sleepy Hill Middle School (50.4%) and Kathleen Middle School (47.5%). Academic proficiency is consistently low, with test scores in English Language Arts and Math roughly 15-30 percentage points below the district average. For example, only 31% of 6th graders are proficient in Math compared to 58% district-wide, and only 39% of 7th graders are proficient in ELA compared to 62% district-wide. The school also serves a student population with a high level of economic need, with 57.2% of students receiving free/reduced lunch, which is significantly higher than the 18.4% at Dr. John Long Middle School.

Despite these challenges, there are notable bright spots. Stewart Middle has an exceptional track record in Algebra 1 End-of-Course exams, with 87% of students proficient in the 2024-2025 school year, far exceeding the district (58%) and state (60%) averages. Additionally, the school's Civics EOC proficiency rate of 78% is 1 point above the state average. Interestingly, per-student spending at Stewart ($9,902) is competitive with higher-performing peers like Cypress Creek Middle School ($7,918) and Dr. John Long ($8,038), suggesting that the performance gap is tied more to non-academic factors like chronic absenteeism and economic disadvantage than to funding. The school's performance aligns more closely with struggling schools in Polk County than with its higher-performing Pasco County peers, indicating that local community conditions play a significant role in student outcomes.

Open Quote I am a 8th grade student at Raymond B. Stewart Middle School, and I find the teachers overall to be very nice. Bullying is handled better than last year, but still needs improvement. One problem I have though is a low education level, I mean at this school I am learning stuff that I learned in fifth grade. Kids themselves do not seem like they care much about learning and in every class I have the highest grade. Kids call me the teachers pet, but I am just trying and not even getting good grades on everything. In all my classes the class average is a F, and I am getting tired of it. The school I think focuses to much on the band program, which since they got a new director isn't as good. Another bad thing is they have a award system called Off The Leash Lanyards, and one of the requirements is that you can't be absent more than three days. I thought this was a good idea at first, but then one of my buddies fell in a fire and had to get surgery. He had good grades and tried his hardest, but for the surgery he was out a week and couldn't get the lanyard. The school overall has good ideas, but those ideas need improvement. Close Quote

Open Quote I was part of the Class 2011-2012 and to be honest, the three years I was there were dreadful! I didn't like most of the teachers and the administration was useless. They will not do anything with bullying or harassment complaints because they just don't care. I was also in the band program and from 6-7 grade it was great and we got AMAZING reviews from competitions. Then in my 8th grade year, we have a new band director and we have not been good since. It is boring and the band director is basically straight out of college. We went from having a record of 5 straight superiors (the highest rating) for 5 years to getting an excellent (second best rating) this year. They were a lot of fights at the middle school and I even remember there was one week that at least one fight occurred each day of that week! The teachers hold your hand at that school and we get away with A LOT at that school. The kids there have bad attitudes and so do the teachers. In my opinion, the principal is the worst out of the whole school. If you care about your child's education, DO NOT COME HERE! I came out as a straight A student but I felt like I taught myself instead of the teachers teaching me. There are some great teachers at that school but it is very rare. Close Quote

Open Quote I went to this school during the 2007-2008 school year. I only went for that year and had just moved to florida. I've been to ALOT of schools(parents in the military) and this is hands down the worst school by far. The teachers are horrible and I didn't learn one useful thing while I was there. The kids are bullies and the administration won't do anything about it. The teachers are so bad i didn't do anything in my math class and passed with a B. I am not exaggerating. I hated this school so much I only went 4 days a week. Sometimes 3. Don't go . Close Quote
