Summary

Eagles Nest Elementary is a PK-5 school in Orlando's Metrowest area, serving 625 students within the Orange school district, where a high percentage of families (65%) qualify for economic assistance. The school has faced significant challenges, consistently ranking in the bottom 11-20% of Florida elementary schools over the past decade, and its most recent state ranking has dropped to the 7th percentile—its lowest point yet. This places it well below nearby schools like Westpointe Elementary (64th percentile) and Oak Hill Elementary (38th percentile), which perform at or above the district average.

The most pressing issue at Eagles Nest is a severe and worsening chronic absenteeism crisis. In the 2023-2024 school year, 44.1% of students were chronically absent—the highest rate among all nearby schools and far above the district average of 35.2%. This rate has more than tripled since 2019-2020, and it is disproportionately high even when compared to schools with similar poverty levels, such as Washington Shores Elementary (51.0% absenteeism) and Ivey Lane Elementary (43.8%). The school also has the highest student-teacher ratio in the area (20.1 students per teacher), making it harder for teachers to provide the individualized support that students who miss class often need.

Academically, Eagles Nest scores below district and state averages in every subject and grade level. For example, only 33% of 5th graders are proficient in math, compared to 64% districtwide. There is one bright spot: 4th graders showed notable improvement in both English Language Arts (49% proficient, up from 36%) and math (47%, up from 32%), suggesting that targeted interventions may be helping this cohort. However, spending per student ($11,097) is in line with better-performing peers like Westpointe Elementary ($11,575), indicating that the core challenge is not funding but getting students back in the classroom consistently.

Open Quote Eagle's Nest Elementary is a dangerous place. Discipline and safety problems are an epidemic, and ignored. Most teachers won't do anything and those that try to do something, get no help from the administration. Teachers that complain, get bullied by the administration. Kids can't learn because they are constantly worrying about bullies. With so many other school options this school has become a school of the leftovers, leftover students, leftover teachers and leftover administration. Many of the teachers are not even certified teachers. Look up "Teach for America." Close Quote
